Our Progress

- Shaomei was invited to Apple’s Workshop on Human Centered Machine Learning and presented our research on benchmarking and building more inclusive speech AI systems (slides). We had great discussions with Apple and academic researchers on the technical and social aspects of speech AI biases. We are scoping a workshop on this topic for CHI 2025 – stay tuned!
- We are excited to share that we have just received our first grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support our work on “Destigmatizing Disfluencies in Speech AI with Grassroots Stuttering Communities”. We will be partnering with Professor Norman Makoto Su from University of California, Santa Cruz to further engage and collaborate with the stuttering community in designing and developing disfluency-friendly speech AI models and speech-powered technologies. For more background and details about our work in this area, please check out our recent and upcoming publications, and subscribe to our newsletter for the latest updates!
- AImpower.org will be attending the InterSpeech 2024 conference in person between September 1st to September 5th. If you are also at InterSpeech, please come say hi! We look forward to connecting with you, and telling you all about why stuttering (and other speech diversities) poses both a challenge and great opportunities for speech AI technologies.
