May 21, 2024The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems is one of the biggest, most renowned research conference on Human Computer Interactions – and, according to the president of ACM during the conference opening speech, “the only ACM conference that includes 'human’ in it’s name”. As we study and (re)design the relationship between technologies and marginalized communities, we publish and share our findings and practices regularly at the CHI conference.
Research Publications
This year, we published and presented two papers from two current workstreams of AImpower.org: inclusive videoconferencing and fair speech AI:
- “Finding My Voice over Zoom: An Autoethnography of Videoconferencing Experience for a Person Who Stutters” was presented by Shaomei (with the support of Jingjin and Gilly) at the “Supporting Communication Needs B” session on Tuesday May 14th;
- “Towards Fair and Inclusive Speech Recognition for Stuttering: Community-led Chinese Stuttered Speech Dataset Creation and Benchmarking” was presented by Qisheng at the “Late-Breaking Work” session on Wednesday May 15th.
Both presentations were well attended and our work was receiving lots of recognition and appreciations from the research/industry communities! We are especially encouraged when lots of student researchers came up and told us how inspiring and refreshing our approaches are, and we look forwards to collaborating more widely with the new generations of tech builders, designers, and thought leaders!

To hear a quick summary about our CHI publications, you can view our recorded presentation on YouTube: [Finding My Voice over Zoom] [Towards Fair and Inclusive Speech Recognition for Stuttering].
Team
We also had a small team gathering at CHI ’24. It was amazing to meet and hang out with Jingjin, Qisheng, and Brennan in the real world, for the very first time! We were finally able to assess each other’s height and (full) OOTD 🤓
